Summary

This is the last substantial standing fragment of the Watercourse Distillery, the Hewitt family whiskey works that made Blackpool one of Cork's great industrial quarters from the 1790s.[2][8] An eleven-bay, three-storey rubble-stone bonded store of c.1800, it survived the demolition of the rest of the complex during construction of the North Link Road in the mid-1990s and has been disused since.[1][2] A 191-unit build-to-rent "Distillery Quarter" scheme that would have converted the warehouse to apartments was refused by An Bord Pleanála in March 2022 partly on heritage grounds, and that refusal was later quashed by the High Court, leaving the building in planning limbo.[3][6]

History & Significance

1792: Partnership formed by Cork butter merchants Thomas Hewitt and John Teulon with London distiller Richard Blunt; the Watercourse Distillery was built on Watercourse Road, Blackpool, between 1793 and 1794, taking its name and water supply from the Kiln River.[2][8]
