Cork City Council's decision to waive over a third of the €800,000 derelict site levy on the former Good Shepherd convent site has drawn criticism, labeled as "a disgrace." The site has been on the derelict sites register since August 2019, accumulating €823,943 in levies by the end of 2025. The council accepted a payment of €500,000 from the owners, Moneda Developments, writing off the remaining €323,943. Sinn Féin TD Thomas Gould argues this decision breaches the Derelict Sites Act, stating that waivers should apply only to individuals, not companies. The site, valued at €1.85 million, was recently sold to Bellmount Good Shepherd for an undisclosed amount, which has committed to settling all outstanding liabilities. The council noted that the site remains on the derelict sites register, accumulating new levies until dereliction is addressed.
