Summary
Garda Terrace is a long, two-storey red-brick terrace inside the Phoenix Park, on North Road beside the An Garda Síochána headquarters (the Phoenix Park Depot), close to the North Circular Road entrance. Built in the 1880s as married quarters for the Royal Irish Constabulary and later used by An Garda Síochána, it is divided into 12 flats. Although a protected structure, it has fallen steadily into disuse: as of mid-2025 only two of the twelve flats were occupied, with the remainder boarded up. It is owned by the Office of Public Works and is a prominent example of long-term State-owned residential vacancy in the middle of a housing crisis. (High)[2]
Identification
- RPS 6746 is explicitly described in heritage documentation as “House — Phoenix Park, Dublin 8, Garda Terrace (near North Circular Road entrance)”, confirming the register entry corresponds to this terrace. (High)[3]
- The terrace sits within the Garda HQ / Phoenix Park Depot complex on North Road; the adjacent North Circular Road entrance gates/piers are separately protected (RPS 6778). (High)[4]
- No separate National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH) record was located specifically for the married quarters terrace; protection appears to rest with the DCC RPS listing rather than a standalone NIAH registration. (Medium — absence of evidence)
